Vege Creek, Taipei: the noodle bowl you build from a wall of vegetables

Walk into Vege Creek (蔬河) in Taipei and the first thing you see is a wall covered in vegetables. You pick what you want, hand over your basket, and a few minutes later it comes back as a hot bowl of noodles in herbal broth.

It's fast, cheap and almost entirely vegetables, which makes it one of the easiest healthy meals a traveler can find in Taiwan. Here's what to know before you go.

What is Vege Creek?

Vege Creek is a Taiwanese vegetarian chain that opened its first shop in 2012 on Yanji Street in Taipei. It has grown to around nine locations in Taipei and Taichung (as of the mid-2020s), many of them in shopping mall food courts, which makes it easy to find when you're out sightseeing.

The idea comes from lu wei, a classic Taiwanese street food where you choose ingredients and they're simmered in a seasoned broth. Vege Creek gives it a modern, vegetable-first twist. Their own motto is about building a wall of vegetables in every corner of the city.

How ordering works

  • Grab a basket and pick from the vegetable wall: leafy greens, mushrooms, pumpkin, tofu, konjac, rice cakes, noodles and more.
  • Each item is packaged and priced on its own. Customer reviews put most small items at around 20 NT dollars and a full bowl at about 160 NT dollars. These aren't official prices, and they can change.
  • Hand your basket to the counter. Everything is cooked together in their broth and served as one bowl.

Why it's a healthy pick

  • Vegetables are the main event, not a side dish. It's an easy way to get several servings in one meal, which can be hard when you're traveling.
  • You decide exactly what goes in, so it suits most eating styles, from vegetarian to simply trying to eat lighter.
  • The broth is brewed with Chinese herbs, salt and pepper, and the chain says it uses no MSG or added fat.
  • Tofu and mushrooms add protein and fiber, so the bowl keeps you full for the afternoon.

What to watch

  • Broth-based dishes can be salty. If you're watching your salt, leave some of the broth in the bowl.
  • Processed items such as plant-based balls and fried tofu taste great but add more salt and oil than fresh vegetables. Enjoy a couple, not half the basket.
  • Some reviewers dislike the plastic packaging on each item, so it's not the most eco-friendly way to eat.

Build a balanced bowl

  • Fill about half your basket with leafy greens and other fresh vegetables.
  • Add one or two protein items such as firm tofu.
  • Choose one starch: noodles or rice cakes, not both.
  • Finish with mushrooms or pumpkin for flavor and fiber.
